Jewellery Care Tips
You may find that you end up collecting a lot of different types of
jewellery over the years and it will all need proper storage and care to
keep it in the best condition. You may, for example, end up with pieces made
from gold, silver and/or platinum, gemset pieces, some costume jewellery
and even beaded and fashion pieces. No matter how valuable the jewellery is
that you buy it won`t take care of itself and you`ll need to do some regular
maintenance here.
Cleaning jewellery
If you prefer you can go to your local jeweller and buy specific cleaners
and polishes for some kinds of jewellery. In extreme cases you can even have
valuable or sentimental pieces cleaned by a jeweller if that is easier.
But, the fact is that cleaning your own jewellery won`t generally be
difficult and it need not be time consuming.
Many pieces of jewellery (such as platinum, gold and pearl pieces) can be
simply cleaned in a weak solution of warm water with some form of mild soap
added to it. You can then use a soft brush or toothbrush to remove debris
before polishing the jewellery with a clean soft cloth. In many cases you
can soak your jewellery to get the best effects but don`t soak gem stones
such as emeralds, opals and amber, lapis lazuli and turquoise.
Silver jewellery that tarnishes easily may need a specific silver polish or
you can simply rub pieces down gently with a mild detergent solution and
polish it up. Silver polishing cloths may also be a good option here.
Fashion and beaded jewellery may need special care - so check to see if you
are given any cleaning instructions when you buy it. Again a wipe with a
detergent solution may help here.
Conclusion
It is also important to make sure that you make an effort to protect your
jewellery pieces to stop them from getting damaged. Soft metals and items
such as pearls can get scratched and damaged if they rub up against other
types of jewellery so try to store things separately to prevent this. You
can buy special jewellery bags for this if you like. It`s a good idea to
invest in some form of jewellery box or store to keep them out of the air
when you are not wearing them. Also, try to avoid wearing jewellery when you
are doing stuff that might damage it. So, take jewellery off when you are
using household chemicals and when you are exercising or playing sport to
avoid contact with perspiration. Follow these tips and your jewellery --
whether it is a cheap fashion item or an A1gifts personalised 50th
birthday present will stay in the best possible condition.
